History

The Lexington Choral Society originated in 1972. Initially a women's ensemble, the group opened its first season on November 11, 1972, with a performance for the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs' district meeting in Lexington. Annual full concerts began in 1981, with the first Spring Sing, followed that fall by the first Welcome to December! Other events often programmed over the years have included summer sings, community sings of Messiah, community carol-sings, and an annual high school vocal scholarship competition.

A "brother" men's group was established in January of 1984, with the two soon merging as a mixed ensemble. Out-of-town appearances by the Choral Society have included two appearances in Myrtle Beach Choral Festival-by-the-Sea (1994 and 1995), a debut performance at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1997, and a presentation in the Choral Artist Series of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC in 2001. The 30th Anniversary 2001 - 2002 season opened with an appearance at the North Carolina Furnishings Festival in High Point, and closed with the promise of many more years of music-making for the love of the art, both close to home and afar.

During the 2002- 2006 seasons, we lost members and gained new members and presented some wonderful concerts. Go to the audio page to listen to some of the selections that were chosen. In December of 2004, we presented  excerpts from the Messiah, a brave undertaking indeed   To the joy of most of our members, we have been making cds  of our live concerts since May , 2001. Some of those CDs  are getting worn out by our members, family and friends.

2006-07 was Lexington Choral Society's 35th Anniversary Season. This was a reason for great celebration and great sadness. At the beginning of the season, Dr. JoAnn Poston announced her retirement effective in May 2007. JoAnn said "It is time" and though most of us disagreed with her, we had toadmit that her love and passion for music had carried us through many years. It was with great regret that we participated in her last formal concert in 2006 and her last Spring Sing in May of 2007. For the December concert, we sang some of her favorite selections and things she especially enjoyed. During the Spring Sing we extended an invitation to the community to join us in a sing through of the Messiah with orchestra. A wonderful time was had by all.

Beginning in June 2007, Phil and Melonie Rector joined LCS as our new directors. It has been great to carry the tradition of Lexington Choral Society forward under new direction.  Yes, Lexington Choral Society is alive and well and preparing  a new season of beautiful music to share with our friends and family.
